How to do a home inventory

I write this post today because I came home yesterday to a neighborhood filled with fire trucks, police cars and smoke billowing out of a house down the street. One of my neighbor’s homes had caught on fire. Working in insurance my thoughts immediately jumped to “I hope they have a good insurance policy” and “I hope they’ve done a home inventory.”

A lot of people don’t realize all the stuff they have until they actually start looking around and writing it down. Having a home inventory is really helpful because you never know when a disaster will strike and its hard to remember what you had after it’s gone. Doing a home inventory will also help you decide if you need to add insurance for engagement rings, fine arts, or collections that you may not have considered before.

Get started today by visiting our resources page and navigating to Know Your Stuff. The Insurance Information Institute created this free online home inventory software that’s very helpful! All you have to do is setup an account on their easy-to-use website then add rooms and items. There is also an app for Iphone and Android that allows you to take photos of your stuff and update your home inventory. Don’t forget to add your second home to the account and take the inventory there!

You can also make a home inventory by writing your stuff down in a journal, taking photos or videos throughout your house and saving your receipts. I like the Know Your Stuff option because your account can be accessed anywhere, anytime. God forbid your paper home inventory burns up with your house…
